Green Smoothies…Made Easy By Sweet Basil

Smoothies are a great way to consume raw greens

Let’s face it, how many of you would eat a bunch of kale, parsley, celery or even spinach by itself? There maybe a few of you who would, but in reality, not many.

Green smoothies provide an excellent opportunity for you to consume large amounts of dark (leafy) greens in one serving.

And yes, green smoothies can taste good too. Most greens are mild in flavor (kale, spinach, celery, ect…) so it is actually easier to hide them than most people think.

For example, by mixing 2 leaves of kale and 1 banana, you’ve done just what we’re talking about.

If you mixed a mild green with a dominate flavoring fruit, chances are you won’t even taste the kale, your drink will of course be green, but the dominate flavor of the banana will be the winning flavor!

Green Smoothies have amazing health benefits, here are the top 10!

1. Green smoothies offer pure nutrition. The amount of vitamins you’ll get depends on the fruits and vegetables you choose for the smoothie. However, most fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins A and C. Guava is also high in folate, while avocados provide high amounts of potassium and magnesium.

2. Green smoothies are much healthier than fruit or vegetable juices. When juices are extracted, you get vitamins and minerals but no fiber. However, smoothies are made using the whole fruit/vegetable, so you get all the fiber in your drink.

3. Green smoothies are a great way to eat your veggies without even realizing it. Although most people like fruit, many have trouble getting their daily requirement of veggies. When you make a green smoothie, the taste of the greens is hidden by the taste of the fruit, so you don’t even notice the veggies are there.

4. Green smoothies are easy and quick to make. The only equipment you need is a blender (and a pitcher if you make large amounts and need to store some in the fridge).

5. Homemade green smoothies are cheap. Buying smoothies at a juice bar can set you back as much as $6 a glass. At home, combining fruits and vegetables won’t cost you more than a few cents. Drinking a glass every day will provide you with all the vitamins you need, a much cheaper (and more natural) option than buying multivitamins.

6. Green smoothies can be a good way to get kids to “eat” their vegetables. You might need to start with a higher proportion of fruit vs. vegetables (for example, 70/30 instead of the standard 60/40) until they get used to the flavor.

7. Green smoothies will provide you with a lasting source of energy. Fruits are a good source of energy, but eaten alone will only provide short bursts of energy (they contain lots of sugars, which are quickly metabolized). Because of their high content of veggies, green smoothies have a balanced sugar content.

8. Green smoothies are low in calories but very filling. Because they contain high amounts of water and fiber, they’ll make you feel as if you just ate a full meal. If you’re trying to lose weight, green smoothies will help fight hunger and cravings while helping the pounds melt off easier.

9. Green smoothies are easy to digest. Because they’re already blended and liquefied, smoothies are quicker to digest. After all, your body no longer needs to work so hard to “break down” the food in order to extract the nutrients. People who suffer from indigestion after eating a heavy meal will also benefit, as smoothies are filling but light.

10. Green smoothies will keep you hydrated. Although one should drink at least eight glasses of water a day, experts believe most people don’t drink even half that amount. One of the reasons for that is that many people simply don’t like the taste of plain water. If that describes you, simply add more water to the mix as you prepare your smoothie. You’ll be drinking more liquids without even noticing it.

High fiber & your health

There is quite a bit of controversy over which is better: fresh green juices or fresh green smoothies? Honestly, we think you need both. You need the fresh juice for liquid vitamins and the smoothie for your fiber boost – which is very important.

Regular consumption of fiber is crucial to your health – it acts like a sponge, soaking up toxins left in your digestive tract and eliminating them from our body.

Fiber has no calories since it is not absorbed into the body; therefore, aiding in the process of weight-control and weight-less. Fiber acts as a bulking agent thus filling the stomach and satisfying hunger for longer.

That is why people are often satisfied with a breakfast smoothie for their morning meal!

pH levels and your health

In order for our bodies to function properly, there must be a certain pH level that is maintained. (the pH level reflects the concentration of hydrogen ions in any given solution) This is measured on a scale of 1 to 14 with 7 being considered the perfect balance.

To make it more simple: when a person’s body becomes too acidic it means they are more prone to diseases and infections because there is not enough good bacteria to fight off the bad bacteria therefore the bad takes control.

When you have alkaline factor of 7 (the happy middle) this usually means the body is in a healthy state of being, meaning the good bacteria (probiotics, enzymes and antioxidants) are in control and can easily fight off the bad bacteria as it attempts to take over.

Most fruits and veggies are alkaline forming foods which are why a smoothie is a good choice.

Who doesn’t want healthier hair, skin and nails?!

You’d be surprised, by adding a green smoothie to your diet, you are adding a natural supplement for your beauty regimen.

Think of it this way: instead of only applying potions and lotions externally, nourish your cells internally by consuming smoothies and foods that are overflowing with vitamins and minerals to help establish the much needed nutrients that will help make your hair, skin and nails looking clearer, radiant and beautiful from the inside out.
